Muskets & Tomahawks is published by Studio Tomahawk and simulates Skirmishes in North America during the 18th Century. One part of these rules I really enjoy is the very clear intent to make the game as much like telling a story or creating a saga of your army and their leaders in the historical setting. Much like their other game Saga, which I also love.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249635552989120755noreply@blogger.comBlogger31125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8721285401050366661.post-38835078223581174172015-07-19T21:01:00.003-04:002015-07-20T06:17:51.876-04:00HISTORICON SAGA Tournament<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next to Muskets & Tomahawks my favorite miniature game is SAGA. Weve been running many SAGA tournaments lately up and down the Mid-Atlantic. This weekend We ran the SAGA Tournament at Historicon. We had a fine field of 14 Warlords that wanted to test their mettle on the fields of valor. Below is a report of their endeavors leading to final victory.....or was it?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9RS2jkWQUHg/VawwCH6Sh4I/AAAAAAAAAoA/LpDIwf39Rjw/s1600/Richard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="301" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9RS2jkWQUHg/VawwCH6Sh4I/AAAAAAAAAoA/LpDIwf39Rjw/s320/Richard.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Looks like Richard the Lion Hearted was there.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Round #1: We used a modified version of the Battle Twilight Scenario. I used some of the changes suggested on the Studio Tomahawk forum. After playing several games with this revised version and seeing 7 games unfold this weekend I have reached two conclusions. The scenario is much better balanced with the revisions, but it is not a good scenario for tournament play. It is a bit tweaky and labor intensive to set up. By tweaky I mean people forget to bring on their endless warband or don't score it right and then see their neighbor score it differently and need help from the judge to get it right. That having been said, I personally like the scenario and believe that in its revised version it will probably see a lot more play. This might help it become tournament-worthy over the next year.<br />
<br />
Round #1: Results. 5 Scenario victories and 2 ties. Slaughter points were kind of low. I attribute that to the labor intensive set up and the tweaky-ness. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Round #2: Second scenario was a scenario I developed based on a historical event I read about during the First Crusades at the battle of Dorylaeum (1097). Titled, "Singulus Iunctus" or "Alone Together", two warlords both seize advantageous terrain and must hold it while trying to dislodge their opponent from his chosen piece of terrain. I really liked this scenario because it causes both players to be aggressive but they both have to make a judgment call early on as to how much to commit to defense and how much to attack with. The scenario was well received by all the participants. <br />
<br />
Round #2 Results. 5 Scenario victories and 2 ties again. Slaughter points we up overall reflecting the aggressiveness required by the scenario.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Anglo-saxon Warlord holds his chosen ground against the Welsh in Round #2</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Round #3: The old favorite with a twist. Clash of Warlords is what I chose for round 3. However, I am always amazed when I see people deploy for this scenario and see them place their warlords as far away from each other as possible. So we made a slight change to this scenario for our tournament. The player who sets up second MUST deploy their warlord directly opposite their opponents warlord. This seemed to work well and we had a nice third round. <br />
<br />
Round #3 Results: 6 scenario victories and 1 tie. Slaughter points were also up with victors averaging about 20 slaughter points for this round. Now that's the way to end a SAGA tournament.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Two Anglo-Saxon shield walls face off in the final round of Clash of Warlords. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Overall Results: Jeff Fletcher was the overall winner with his Crusaders the only army to gain three straight Scenario Victories. Second place went to Christine Argyle and her Vikings who gave her two wins and a tie. We had a tie for third place with four warlords gaining two wins and a loss. But Jeff Herzog pulling out the third place based on slaughter points. His Angl-Saxons accumulated 51 total slaughter points over the three rounds. <br />

The wrap-up. Footsore Miniatures handed out the spoils with a 4-point Irish warband going to Jeff for first place. Many thanks to Footsore for their generosity and support of these events. It just so happened the US Grand Melee Champion, Jeff Wiltrout, was present at Historicon and he threw down the gauntlet for the victor of the tournament to play in a friendly post tournament game. Jeff W. rolled out his Skraelings, "for the last time" to face off against Jeff Fletcher's Crusaders. I am not sure why but Jeff F. decided to mix up his force and instead of fielding his tournament winning Crusader army he rolled out a "Peter the Hermit" version. So we had Skraelings vs fanatical pilgrims. In the end the Skraelings came out victorious. <br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1755 ended in a resounding victory for the French who continue to lead in their efforts to secure the North American Continent. I wanted to wrap up 1755 with some of the late submissions before I record the results of our 1756 Campaign efforts at the Fall In convention. It is now 1756 and we concluded the third campaign year (1755) for our World-wide Muskets and Tomahawks Campaign Game with even more players than for previous Campaign Years. Below is a summary of how things concluded for 1755.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The French gain the 10 extra victory points for the 1755 Battle for the Wilderness bringing the totals to:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">French - 224</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">British - 161</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here is the Map at the conclusion of 1755.</span></strong><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And here are the final player scores. Remember your natural talent is based on the type of officer you have leading your force. Promotion points can be used for actual promotion and/or one promotion point can be spent to provide you officer an additional talent rolled randomly.</span><br />

As the campaign year 1755 comes to a close for our campaign using Muskets and Tomahawks I wanted to give a quick overview of the situation followed by the individual results.<br />
<br />
On all fronts the French have turned back the three British Attacks. In the West (Round 1 Expedition vs Ambush) the French defeated the British 30 victory points to 24. In other words Braddocks defeat was still a defeat but not as devastating as it had been. In the Lakes region (Round 2 Pursuit vs Rear Guard) the French 26 VP dominated the British (13 VP). Finally the Acadia incursion (Round 3 Engagement vs Hasty Defense) by sea has been repulsed with French securing 39 victory points and the British gaining 21 VP. Overall results are shown below.<br />

The French gain the 10 extra victory points for the 1755 Battle for the Wilderness bringing the totals to:<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">French - 214</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">British - 135</span></strong><br />

Next up are the rules and scenarios for 1756. Individual results below. We had several players who had a hard time getting in all three games this time. Remember your natural talent is based on the type of officer you have leading your force. Promotion points can be used for actual promotion and/or one promotion point can be spent to provide you officer an additional talent rolled randomly.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Results for the 1755, "Battle in the Wilderness" year of the World-wide Muskets and Tomahawk Campaign are beginning to roll in. As a refresher here is the background and basics to the 1755 campaign.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">On April 14,
1755, Governors of the British Provinces met in Virginia to determine a
strategy to force the French from North America. It was determined that three
separate expeditions would be launched against the enemy. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Collectively these three expeditions have
some similarities.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All three entailed an
expeditionary effort through remote wilderness areas.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Both land expeditions ended up being ambushed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Additionally, during this year there were
efforts on both sides to erect and improve the fortifications that protected the
wilderness frontier for both sides.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This
required men, supplies and significant transportation effort to bring the
needed supplies to these frontier forts.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Often called the “battle for the Wilderness”, Commanders during 1755 had to make tradeoffs between escorting supplies, scouting, defending or
launching an attack against an enemy expedition.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Finally there were several instances where
forces had to mount a hasty defense, conduct a pursuit of fleeing enemy or
conduct rear guard actions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To reflect
the nature of the conflict during 1755 five new mission objectives are created
and the following tournament guidelines are provided to fight the battle of the
Wilderness Campaign 1755.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />

Along Braddock's Road in Central Pennsylvania is an important fort built in 1756 on land donated by Matthew Patton. Fort Loudoun was one of many "frontier forts" that popped up during 1756 as the French Allies of the Ottawas, Mississaugas, Wyandots, and Potawatomis tribes conducted raids throughout the Cumberland Valley to "break the backcountry" of the British possessions in central and western Pennsylvania. Mr. Patton donated the key piece of property to the British Army after his own homestead was raided by such a group the previous year and his house burned to the ground. My Brother and I had a chance to visit Fort Loudoun a few weeks ago. <br />

The fort was built by Colonel Armstrong in a hurry during the month of November and had to be finished before the winter set in. It was a simple fort measuring only 127' x 127' and set along side a stream. The location was strategic in that it protected the "New Road" and was at a key intersection of several valleys that served as key avenues of approach for the Indian raiding parties to enter the valley. See the map below. The red dot in the lower left corner is Fort Loudoun. Notice the mountain valley to the north feeds directly into the position of the fort.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AcdOny7MAvU/VAHw-JN2daI/AAAAAAAAAhM/y6Kur0O5BW8/s1600/1-2-644-25-ExplorePAHistory-a0c0g8-a_349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AcdOny7MAvU/VAHw-JN2daI/AAAAAAAAAhM/y6Kur0O5BW8/s1600/1-2-644-25-ExplorePAHistory-a0c0g8-a_349.jpg" height="243" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Its construction lacked much of the elegance of a typical fort of the era. The picture below shows a current day replica of the fort and its unique firing platforms. These were much criticized but apparently Colonel Armstrong had to make some compromises to erect the fort in a timely manner.<br />

In a letter from Colonel Armstrong to the Governor dated November 19, 1756, COL Armstrong describes the location of the fort. <br />
<em> "According to yr Honour's Orders I have...fixed on a place near Parnell's Knob where one Patton lived, the spot I hope will be agreeable to your Honour as it is near the New Road......I am making the best preparation in my power to forward the new fort as well as prepare the Barracks, &c, all the others for the approaching Winter and today we begin to dig the cellar in the new fort; logs & roof of a new house having there been erected by Patton before the Indians burns his old one. We shall appraise this house, and then take the benefit of it, either for Officer's Barracks or a store house, by which means the provisions may the sooner be moved to this place (referring to McDowell's Mill) which at present divides our strength."</em><br />

Monitoring some of the comments I've received from emails and some of the discussions over at this group <a href="http://www.diefestung.com/forum/thread.php?postid=827773" target="_blank">Diefestung Group Discussion</a> , I decided I really needed to update my original idea to create a tournament system. Most people are not interested in setting up a M&T tournament but are very interested in the idea of linking games and in the system that allows for their "character" to progress in Talents and promotion. <br />
<br />
So I've changed the blog page that used to be titled "Tournament Format" to "Campaign Ideas." I also cleaned up the comments there to clarify how characters earn "Talents" not "Traits." Talents are officer capabilities whereas Traits are unit capabilities. So I think I have cleared up some of those ideas. <br />
<br />
As always I enjoy your comments and the ideas you share with me. Please keep them coming. <br />
<br />
1755 has started. I sent out the Campaign rules for 1755 as well as the scenarios for this campaign round. If you were expecting to receive them and you did not please let me know. <br />
<br />
As the picture above indicates, Braddock is on his way to Fort Duquesne. Will the French and Indians successfully spring the ambush or will he escape? You decide the fate of the F&I War this time around by playing more Muskets and Tomahawks. There is a great write up about Braddock's Defeat that you can read about here <a href="http://www.britishbattles.com/braddock.htm" target="_blank">Braddock's Defeat</a><br />

There are only a few more days left before I close out the first part of the worldwide Muskets and Tomahawks Campaign on 30 June. </span></span><br />

With 23 players submitting results so far things have heated up here at the end. All input has followed the 1754 rules I published in March for the Cold Wars Tournament. Here is the breakdown of the players, their force alignment and final scores. A max of 6 points was available for each of the three rounds. 3 points for accomplishing the round's objective, 2 points for accomplishing your subplot and 1 point if you prevent your opponent from accomplishing his objective. Tie breaker for individual tournament champion determined by kills during all three rounds.</span><br style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;" /><br style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;" /><strong style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;"><span style="background-color: blue; color: white;">French Players</span></strong><br style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;" /><u style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;">Player </u><span style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;"> </span><u style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;">Character's Name </u><span style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;"> </span><u style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;"> Total Points </u><span style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;"> </span><u style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;">Character's Promotion Points</u><br style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;" /><span style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;">Nick G Squinting Dog 10 Natural Talent</span><br style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;" /><span style="background-color: #441500; color: #ffeedd; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20.285999298095703px;">Croft Lieut. Several M&T players from all over the world asked if they could join in the campaign and make their M&T games have an impact on the opening moves of 1754. So I extended the 1754 phase of the Campaign till the end of June. With the 1755 scenarios play tested and about to launch I know some of you have planned M&T days to close out you input for 1754. So as prelude to those hotly contested events I wanted to provide an update to 1754 based on the input I have received as of 19 June.<br />
<br />
All input has followed the 1754 rules I published for the Cold Wars Tournament. Here is the breakdown of the players, their force alignment and final scores. A max of 6 points was available for each of the three rounds. 3 points for accomplishing the round's objective, 2 points for accomplishing your subplot and 1 point if you prevent your opponent from accomplishing his objective. Tie breaker for individual tournament champion determined by kills during all three rounds.<br />

Each round of the year's scenario has an impact on the following round and on the overall Campaign Game. This first phase of the M&T campaign game reflects the opening year 1754 of what would become the French and Indian war and each round was reflective of objectives and sub-plots that would likely characterize the French, British and Indian maneuvers in the Ohio River Valley 1754 on the eve of this great conflict. <br />
The British continue to lead the overall results for 1754. While they did make some gains for the scouting vs scouting scenario of round #1 their true strength seems to be in the round 3 engagement scenario. I guess once those British Regulars can come to grips with the French they are truly in their glory. This will give the British team an additional 7 victory points for the Ohio River Valley Campaign if they can hold onto their lead between now and the end of June. <br />
<br />
Next up is 1755 Battle of the Wilderness 225-230 point forces, Traits can be bought using promotion points earned in the Ohio River Valley Campaign (does not count against force point total). The Wilderness Campaign is worth 10 Campaign Points to the side that is declared the overall victor. 1755 rules and scenarios will be posted with the final results of 1754 in a few weeks.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249635552989120755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8721285401050366661.post-79112942165264292162014-05-27T20:42:00.001-04:002014-05-27T21:48:17.834-04:00Liebster Award<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So what is the Liebster award. There are actually several different descriptions of it if you check it out in a Google search. In summary it is a promotional concept to get visibility of good blog sites that have interests similar to your own that have limited populations signed up for the site. So in that vein let me recommend the following great sites.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After nominating these sites for their own Liebster Award, I am supposed to tell you a little about my self and my blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1). Why did I start blogging? I seriously love the game Muskets and Tomahawks. It is by far one of the best miniature wargame rules sets I have played in my 40+ years of wargaming. I wanted to share my excitement for these rules and try and get a worldwide campaign started to give more people a reason to play more games of M&T.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2) if I could change one thing about wargaming what would it be? I hate editions and the ever changing marketing strategy of some wargaming writers. I don't need a perfect set of rules. In fact I believe there is no such thing. What I need is a consistent set of rules that doesn't change rules and more importantly army lists every few years. I got it. They were not perfect when you published them. Give me a FAQ or addendum, but don't make me buy the rules again. I won't do it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3). Do you read battle reports and what makes for a good BR? I do like to read battle reports. I will be honest. I am a terrain freak and if the battle report doesn't have some decent pictures and good terrain, I am not likely to read it. But that being said. I have read some great reports without these "must have" components. What makes a good BR is someone who takes the time to discuss the thinking of the commanders and what they were trying to do. This allows me to understand the tactics being attempted and allows for an assessment of what worked or didn't and why.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4) Is figure painting a chore or a pleasure? Yes. It is a chore and a pleasure. I have never achieved nirvana as a figure painter. I fuss and fidget, spend time choosing colors and then rethinking the colors I have chosen. But when I finish a unit I must admit it is a huge pleasure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5) Napoleon was once quoted as saying he preferred lucky generals over skilled. What are you, lucky or skilled? I am absolutely unlucky but I can't say I am skilled. I guess I accept the fates as they are, and NEVER rely on luck. I strive to learn the craft of becoming a skilled general and that is what makes the hobby pleasurable for me. I have occasionally had remarkably great dice rolls that defy the odds but I have also had remarkably bad dice rolls. I usually take these for what they are; oddities that are also part of warfare, and this also adds to the aura of the hobby. The plan's of men can only ever be just plans and once it runs into the enemy, generalship is what wins the battle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6) If I had to limit my gaming to a single period and scale what would it be? 28mm French and Indian War!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7). If I had to limit my figures to a single manufacturer which one would it be? Perry Brothers are simply fantastic.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

As you can see from the above scores we had a tie for first place between Nick and Jeff C. The tie breaker was number of points of enemy figures killed or routed from the board during the three rounds of tournament play. Nick took the final honors having eliminated 254 points of enemy during the three rounds compared to only 154 points for Jeff C. Congratulations to Nick for taking the individual honors. <br />

<span style="background-color: blue; color: white;">French Points:</span> 3<br />
<span style="color: red;">British Points:</span> 19 (a major British victory)<br />
<br />
Here is what the campaign game overall situation looks like leading into the next round.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v3_7BCFR-0Q/UyYPpCBOeeI/AAAAAAAAAdI/BPbbmuH9E64/s1600/TournamentCampaignMap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v3_7BCFR-0Q/UyYPpCBOeeI/AAAAAAAAAdI/BPbbmuH9E64/s1600/TournamentCampaignMap.jpg" height="307" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The British lead the overall campaign with a total of 42 points. (35+7)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The British team came back in the last round with an overwhelming victory that propelled them to 35 points for the tournament. This meant they not only surpassed the French in victory points for the last round but also for the entire tournament. So despite narrowly losing the scouting battle in round one and failing to successfully raid the French settlements in round two, the British thoroughly trounced the French in open engagement during round three with three of the four British players meeting their Engagement Victory conditions but also three of the four British players accomplished their subplot. This gives the British team an additional 7 victory points for the Ohio River Valley Campaign. Thus the British lead in Campaign points 42 to 30 in the overall scheme of the campaign. Plan is to play this round of the Campaign during HISTORICON.<br />

Here is a great battle report from Kevin S. and the exploits of Lt Jacques Chiroc. <a href="http://foge.blogspot.com/2014/03/cold-wars-muskets-tomahawks-tournament.html" target="_blank">Lt Chiroc in the Ohio River Valley 1754</a> Really great Battle Report. Thanks Kevin.<br />

The Engagement vs Engagement in round three caused much action on all four boards. Here we see some heavy fighting in the densely forested board on one of the Spring/Summer boards.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9n2lcPlhFI/UxkfJTimJ6I/AAAAAAAAAck/2iXBX7QAywo/s1600/summer1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9n2lcPlhFI/UxkfJTimJ6I/AAAAAAAAAck/2iXBX7QAywo/s1600/summer1.jpeg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Summer/Spring #1</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Summer #1 has the challenge of a building right on the center point of the board. This will make this a key terrain feature for all the scenarios but especially for any round with scouting as the objective. <div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6kgurXVNAAk/Uxkez21bL5I/AAAAAAAAAcc/7T_qQbVn4IM/s1600/summer2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6kgurXVNAAk/Uxkez21bL5I/AAAAAAAAAcc/7T_qQbVn4IM/s1600/summer2.jpeg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Summer/Spring #2</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Summer #2 is similar to Summer #1 with a barn right on the center point of the board. During play testing, this barn was hotly contested and changed hands several times. Neither side accomplished their scouting objective. So perhaps going for the key terrain feature is not the way to go?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7NIKO_L6txE/UxkeotOv__I/AAAAAAAAAcU/zkDqGXkIKxU/s1600/winter.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7NIKO_L6txE/UxkeotOv__I/AAAAAAAAAcU/zkDqGXkIKxU/s1600/winter.jpeg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Winter Board</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Winter board is probably the most open of all the boards. Buildings again in the center. Here I am substituting some cardboard inserts for what will be Indian Huts. The board is narrower than the other boards with the major water feature down one flank. So maneuver room is limited. <br />

That's right and ten M&T players will be throwing down their forces at Cold Wars this Saturday night from 6pm until we are done.<br />
<br />
The Scouts have just returned and below are their sketches of the terrain we will see on Saturday. These first two boards I laid out today and packed them away for transport. But I snapped a pic of each. The next three battle boards will be posted tomorrow. <br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yKuomirSvQA/Uxd57M50MII/AAAAAAAAAb0/3jnN-4qfvbU/s1600/summer&fall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yKuomirSvQA/Uxd57M50MII/AAAAAAAAAb0/3jnN-4qfvbU/s1600/summer&fall.jpg" height="202" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The scout's sketches.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aFZOwM2q7C0/Uxd5-iFR4iI/AAAAAAAAAb8/h6dszN7yTGc/s1600/Fallboard.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aFZOwM2q7C0/Uxd5-iFR4iI/AAAAAAAAAb8/h6dszN7yTGc/s1600/Fallboard.jpeg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fall board - rotated 90 degrees from sketch Sorry.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The Fall board has a lot of open area in the center of the table. Each side will have to hug the edges to scout all four quadrants without taking excessive casualties. The side that enters the board nearest the log cabins (from the left of the photo, from the top of the sketch) could set up a good firing position but then they wouldn't be able to scout and must eventually come down off the hill to get the other three quadrants scouted.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jQDmHqFeDEI/Uxd6CGxGMpI/AAAAAAAAAcE/lsYnBxRkMOE/s1600/Summer%233.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jQDmHqFeDEI/Uxd6CGxGMpI/AAAAAAAAAcE/lsYnBxRkMOE/s1600/Summer%233.jpeg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Summer #3</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Lots of terrain in the center on Summer #3. The terrain pretty much drives everyone towards the center of the board. The battle on this board promises to be quick and bloody.<br />
<br />
As a reminder. We are going three rounds. <br />
<br />
<strong>Each round represents a stage of the Ohio River Valley Campaign:</strong><br />
<u>Round 1</u>: Testing the waters: Scouting Objective vs Scouting Objective. <br />
<u>Round 2</u>: War Begins – Raid!: Raid Objective vs Defense Objective. If one player accomplished his scouting objective in round 1 he may select which objective he wants in round 2. If not roll a die and high score choses. <br />
<u>Round 3</u>: It’s time to battle: Engagement vs Engagement (or scouting vs engagement if one side is Indians, Irregular or Militia who must scout vs engage for this round). <br />
<br />
So check out the terrain and plan your moves ahead of time. It promises to be bloody and brisk.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249635552989120755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8721285401050366661.post-40045703236542912592014-02-13T12:36:00.000-05:002014-02-13T12:36:13.900-05:00Compagnie Franche de la Marine I have used my French Regular force several times and did not like their lack of Irregular troop capability. In my experience a regular force without some unit to scout and clear dense terrain is the beginning of the end for any Regulars trying to accomplish an objective on the M&T battle board. So I contracted to have some Compagnie Franche de la Marine and a few Indians painted up to supplement my French. Here are some pictures of the completed figures. All painted by Alan Mander. Alan's work can be found on the Warlord Games web site here. http://us-store.warlordgames.com/collections/french-indian-war-1754-1764

I have taken the plunge and volunteered to run the first ever Muskets and Tomahawks tournament. I do hope this is the first of many. The venue is the HMGS Cold Wars Convention in Lancaster PA. Here is the link
http://www.coldwars.org/
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FJO5g1gYNU4/UsnozdpGnaI/AAAAAAAAAYM/6gdxzOpY1yQ/s1600/musketsandtoma.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FJO5g1gYNU4/UsnozdpGnaI/AAAAAAAAAYM/6gdxzOpY1yQ/s320/musketsandtoma.jpg" /></a></div>
I was asked by a couple of M&T players to run a tournament on Saturday of Cold Wars. The plan is to keep it simple but I am going to use my themed tournament idea and given that it is the first and we are keeping the point totals at 200 points I am making this the "Ohio River Valley" themed tournament. I am busily making terrain and hope to have boards as nice as the one pictured below.
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xQhtnTmodgU/UsnpngSyEJI/AAAAAAAAAYU/cv0b9828vkI/s1600/musketsandtomaboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xQhtnTmodgU/UsnpngSyEJI/AAAAAAAAAYU/cv0b9828vkI/s320/musketsandtomaboard.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Photo of M&T board at Hamburg Tactica 2013 taken from <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=48378.30">http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=48378.30</a><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My goal is to make this a beautiful display event as well as an inviting chance for new players to jump in and play a round or two. I will have plenty of loaner armies available and I will run demo games to teach people how to play. Loyalhanna Outpost http://loyalhannaoutpost.com/ has been nice enough to provide some packs of unpainted Galloping Major Indians as prize support. <br />
<br />
Finally. Here is the draft of the tournament themed rules. Your comments and advice are greatly appreciated.
<br />
<br />
<b>Muskets & Tomahawks Themed Tournament – The Ohio River Valley Campaign (1753-1754)</b><br />
<br />
<b>Army Limitations:</b> 200-210 points from any list in the M&T rule book, no traits or artillery or cavalry.
Table size & Scenery: 4x4 tables each with 2 buildings. Lots of woods and possibly a stream or river. No straight line exceeding 24 inches without running into terrain.
<br />
<br />
<b>Victory Conditions and tournament scoring.</b> Victory points are based on accomplishing Objectives and sub-plots. Total your points from the below list. Between 0 and 6 points are possible for each round.
Accomplish your scenario objective = 3 points
Accomplish your sub- Plot = 2 points
Opponent does not accomplish his objective = 1 point
Tie breaker will be number of points of enemy figures killed by each side.
<br />
<br />
<b>Scenario objectives and plot background:</b> The French and Indian War began after a series of incidents in the upper Ohio River valley, which the French and British governments both claimed as their territory. Military forces assembled by both imperial powers built and attempted to capture each other’s forts in the region. These expeditions and skirmishes ultimately led to the escalation of a wider, full-scale war between Great Britain and France. While French and British officials maneuvered military forces about, they also attempted to curry favor with American Indians living in the region. Both sides had Indian allies. However, many Indians in the upper Ohio Valley were concerned about colonists encroaching upon their land, and did not acknowledge British or French authority. This tournament reflects the characteristics of this campaign.
<br />
<br />
<b>Each round represents a stage of the Ohio River Valley Campaign:</b><br />
<u>Round 1</u>: Testing the waters: Scouting Objective vs Scouting Objective.
<br />
<u>Round 2</u>: War Begins – Raid!: Raid Objective vs Defense Objective. If one player accomplished his scouting objective in round 1 he may select which objective he wants in round 2. If not roll a die and high score choses.
<br />
<u>Round 3</u>: It’s time to battle: Engagement vs Engagement (or scouting vs engagement if one side is Indians, Irregular or Militia who must scout vs engage for this round).
<br />
<br />
<strong>Sub-plots:</strong> For each round, each side rolls a D6 to determine which sub-plot they have from the list below.
<br />
1-"Negotiations"
<br />
2-"I'll prove my worth"<br />
3-"Emotive"<br />
4-"Boldness"<br />
5-"Authority"<br />

So for something different I present my most recently painted unit for SAGA. I am beginning a Byzantine Army and could not resist the possibility of recruiting some Steppe Nomads Swords for Hire into my warband. So I dug around in my unpainted figure collection and found these old figures partially painted. I cleaned them up, re-primed them and started painting them two weekends ago. Here they are completed. I believe they are mostly old Essex Miniatures. Next up will be my Byzantine infantry.

Thanks to Nick and Jeff who helped me set it up and run it. But most importantly we had 6 great players who really made the evening fun. It was great to see the characters of Captain Dalyell, Maj Rogers and Chief Pontiac come to life on the battlefield. All in all it was a draw with Pontiac achieving his SubPlot and preventing the British from achieving their Plot and CPT Dalyell and the Commander of the British Lights both achieving their subplots and avoiding the 50% casualty mark necessary for the Indian victory plot. I apologize for my poor picture quality. My tripod was broken and I need to be schooled on the importance of f ratings.

The Battlefield after set up and before deployment. Indian Village in upper right is the British objective of their raid. The Bloody Run can be seen down the middle of the board with the infamous bridge seen as the river road crosses the run along the Detroit River.

The British deploy with the regulars marching down the river road. Rogers Rangers in scouting to the front of the main column and a bateaux with swivel gun in the bow scouting ahead along the banks of the river. The lights were thrown out to the regulars left in the fields to protect their flank. A perfectly planned British deployment and does not reflect any of arrogance shown by the original Captain Dalyell.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n1UaUC4qY9Y/UfL063B9rXI/AAAAAAAAAVs/7vCJ4YIRqiU/s1600/PICT0537.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n1UaUC4qY9Y/UfL063B9rXI/AAAAAAAAAVs/7vCJ4YIRqiU/s400/PICT0537.JPG" /></a></div>

Suddenly fire rattles out from across the run. Fire appears split between the marching regulars and the bateaux. The regulars form into firing lines.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7UGwn1M4K9w/UfL2HURAwgI/AAAAAAAAAWE/1xTZAqCjU1s/s1600/PICT0543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7UGwn1M4K9w/UfL2HURAwgI/AAAAAAAAAWE/1xTZAqCjU1s/s400/PICT0543.JPG" /></a></div>
Suddenly the indians emerge from the forest and the ambush is sprung. Will the line hold....
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BrHQErYtvcw/UfL2ZEIxSrI/AAAAAAAAAWM/Gwo0Cwyqb-Y/s1600/PICT0546.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BrHQErYtvcw/UfL2ZEIxSrI/AAAAAAAAAWM/Gwo0Cwyqb-Y/s400/PICT0546.JPG" /></a></div>
The melee continue into a third round of hand to hand but the British Regulars hold their position and beat off the initial indian attack.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f97NdaPH0_g/UfL2tLpDMFI/AAAAAAAAAWU/dFyAF7qaD4o/s1600/PICT0547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f97NdaPH0_g/UfL2tLpDMFI/AAAAAAAAAWU/dFyAF7qaD4o/s400/PICT0547.JPG" /></a></div>

The lights advance into the woods to try and clear out the ambushers.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tNqtg3KAazk/UfL3O4AqTFI/AAAAAAAAAWk/QitcHG4rCwI/s1600/PICT0551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tNqtg3KAazk/UfL3O4AqTFI/AAAAAAAAAWk/QitcHG4rCwI/s400/PICT0551.JPG" /></a></div>
The highwater mark of the British advance. The Bateux was able to fire several swivel gun shots into the Indian attackers along the North side of the road, but suffered heavy casualties from Indian marksmen. They ended up drifting down the river at the end of the battle.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WdQkv96VNkI/UfL3n-S2WMI/AAAAAAAAAWs/4fRUc9yyM6I/s1600/PICT0552.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WdQkv96VNkI/UfL3n-S2WMI/AAAAAAAAAWs/4fRUc9yyM6I/s400/PICT0552.JPG" /></a></div>

This year we are recreating the Battle of Bloody run since it is almost exactly 250 years since that fateful early morning on July 31, 1763 when Captain Dalyell sallied from the besieged Fort Detroit to punish the insolence of the Native Americans. Here are some shots of my home made terrain. Happy to answer questions about how I made it. Not really hard at all.
First we need about 20 feet of field dividers/hedges or fencing. I was a little short so made about 40 of these 5" beauties to be able to make enough to recreate the battlefield.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UI0AkmgahZw/UeMMUO4HTLI/AAAAAAAAASs/E2GHCWmMKpI/s1600/PICT0485.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UI0AkmgahZw/UeMMUO4HTLI/AAAAAAAAASs/E2GHCWmMKpI/s200/PICT0485.JPG" /></a></div>
The before shot. Used large popsicle sticks, fishtank stones and good ol' Elmers glue. Cut the round ends off the sticks using some large wire cutters. Mixed up a paste of stones and glue in a cup. Do not try and do more than 5 or 6 at a time. The glue drys and the mess gets way to sticky. Better to work in small batches. The paste must not be watery. use only a little glue so that the paste is....well....pasty. If the mixture is watery the stones will simply slide off the stick. Very messy. Take your stick and mound up the stone-glue paste onto the stick and shape with two spare sticks by squeezing the mound between the two to shape so that your stack of stones is thinner on top than on bottom. Set aside to dry over night.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BXYGiJV3bGM/UeMNgFIiBnI/AAAAAAAAAS4/e0S8411vSfU/s1600/PICT0487.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BXYGiJV3bGM/UeMNgFIiBnI/AAAAAAAAAS4/e0S8411vSfU/s200/PICT0487.JPG" /></a></div>
The during shot. Here you see the walls after they dry over night. I added some larger stone in here. On some of the others I glued nails to the stick before I stacked the paste. The nails will become small trees later. You will see.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N_0CfgGcnnk/UeMOOVSdgGI/AAAAAAAAATA/7G5pqwuXgFE/s1600/PICT0490.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N_0CfgGcnnk/UeMOOVSdgGI/AAAAAAAAATA/7G5pqwuXgFE/s200/PICT0490.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ye60LMHz8aY/UeMOSsiyMSI/AAAAAAAAATI/Z8uz8Kwoa88/s1600/PICT0491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ye60LMHz8aY/UeMOSsiyMSI/AAAAAAAAATI/Z8uz8Kwoa88/s200/PICT0491.JPG" /></a></div>
The after shots. This is only a portion of what I made. Needed about 40 of them for the game. After they dry, I sprayed them with black primer. Let them dry about 20 minutes then hit them with a spray of grey primer. hit them lightly from different angles to sort of highlight the stone on top of the black primer. I had to go back over some of them with a dry brush of Fortress Grey. I then painted the wooden bases brown to match my terrain boards and added Tree foliage to the nails and added foliage to other areas where it seemed natural to have a bush or two.
Now onto the Detroit River. I have never had to create such a large terrain feature before. The battle took place along the banks of the Detroit River and the run or stream that the British raiding party had to cross over was a tributary and flowed into the larger River. So below is my version of the banks of the Detroit River.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_XZtxUZLKT0/UeMPuy2pZsI/AAAAAAAAATY/Ac4LTLwPwa8/s1600/PICT0498.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_XZtxUZLKT0/UeMPuy2pZsI/AAAAAAAAATY/Ac4LTLwPwa8/s200/PICT0498.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UynJii4B0dk/UeMPyB9Xa-I/AAAAAAAAATg/d74Mul-iBc0/s1600/PICT0499.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UynJii4B0dk/UeMPyB9Xa-I/AAAAAAAAATg/d74Mul-iBc0/s200/PICT0499.JPG" /></a></div>
I made these by spreading an old sheet tightly over my work table and then clamped it down. I drew out the outline of the river using a marker that bled through the sheet. I then used Cedar Tan colored caulking, brand name DAP, that I got at Home Depot. Make sure you buy the type that holds paint. I then squeezed it onto the sheet using my caulking gun and spread it using a paint scraper so that it was about 1/8 of an inch and covering the outline I drew onto the sheet. I made sure the banks of the river were slightly higher than the area I was going to paint blue for the water. I let it dry a few hours and then while it is still sticky and not completely dry I sprinkled some sand onto the area that would be the banks of the river and gently pushed it into the drying caulk so the sand could set with the caulk. Next you let it dry completely and then unclamp the sheet and cut out your terrain piece following the outline that bled through to the back side of the sheet. Then paint the water dark blue, the banks of the river a brown that matches your terrain choice and then highlight both the water and ground. The close up shows the final highlighted version on the left and the partially complete version on the right.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q0l1iGCCCaA/UeMWM1H21CI/AAAAAAAAATw/eG8QDw7tDYc/s1600/PICT0493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q0l1iGCCCaA/UeMWM1H21CI/AAAAAAAAATw/eG8QDw7tDYc/s200/PICT0493.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QFEvFrsHLls/UeMWPZ6OuOI/AAAAAAAAAT4/WUVgtJJ9jAY/s1600/PICT0494.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QFEvFrsHLls/UeMWPZ6OuOI/AAAAAAAAAT4/WUVgtJJ9jAY/s200/PICT0494.JPG" /></a></div>
Roads and bridges. I used the same caulking technique and the same color caulk to make my roads. Using an old sheet, spread it tightly over a table and clamp it down. Sketch the outline of the roads. Spread the caulk to about 1/8 of an inch thickness. You may even want to go less on the roads. Let the caulk dry about 6-8 hours. You don't want it to be sticky but soft enough to hold an impression when you push on it. I then took an old cannon wheel from a 28mm model and put a short wooden dowel through the axel of the wheel and ran the wheel up and down the road to make ruts in the road. I also used the dowel to poke "hoof prints" into the road. Don't overdo it but just enough to give the impression this is a road and not a brown stream. Let dry and then cut out with scissors. Painting is even easier. I simply watered down some Umber paint and washed it over the cut out road and let dry.
Also In the above picture you can see the bridge. I made this using hobby wood purchased at a craft store. This is an important feature of the battle as the British were crossing the "Bloody" Run using this bridge when Pontic and his allies sprung the ambush.
I finished painting the British last night but need to do the bases and then dull coat them. I should have pictures up in a day or two.
If you are going to HISTORICON please come by and say hi. The game is Saturday evening.
Cheers. Plan is for Nick Grenier and I to put on a Muskets and Tomahawks game in honor of the Battle of Bloody Run during Pontiac's Rebellion. Since the actual Roger's Rangers were involved I got the honor of painting them up. Here are the pictures of the finished product.<br />

The original battle only had about 250 combatants. Perfect for an M&T game. Here is the scene setter:<br />
<br />
In the pre-dawn hours of July 31, 1763 Captain Dalyell sallied from the besieged Fort Detroit to punish the insolence of the Native Americans by burning their village. Pontiac, well aware of the British plans, lay in wait for the overconfident attackers, eager to fulfill a prophecy that the British would be driven from America. Will the nearby stream run with British or Native American blood this day?<br />
<br />
The game will host 6 players, with 3 on each side. Plots and sub-plots will of course be used to get that cinematic feel M&T gamers love. <br />
<br />
Now that the Rangers are done on to the British Line infantry. <span style="color: white;">Last weekend I had the privilege of playing in a SAGA tournament to raise money for Wounded Warriors. Besides a portion of the entrance fee going to this worthy cause, during our games we could re-roll any combat die by simply throwing a contribution into the glass jar. Unfortunately, in the heat of battle, many of us simply did not think to do this during our games. Most just tossed in a contribution at the end of the tournament. It came to mind that it might have been a good idea to have a few mercenary units "for hire" to the highest bidder. We could have bid for the units between rounds with the winner being able to use the mercenary unit in substitution of 1 point in the war band which they brought. Theses Swords For Hire would have to be different from that in the current rules and somewhat powerful enough to solicit a desire to hire them. I know it may mess up play balance, etc.,. but in a friendly game for charity not sure that matters. As such i developed the following three Sword For Hire units. Please feel free to critique and/or comment. I have not play tested them yet but plan to once i get some feedback from the SAGA community. The three units are:</span></div>

I have been spending most of my hobby time this month preparing to run a Muskets and Tomahawks game at Fall In. I am slowly finishing up my French and Pennsylvania Provincials. Here are a few pictures. <br />

The Game I am running at Fall In represents a French and Indian Raid on one of the many small forts built by the settlers in the Cumberland and Susquehanna Valley. So of course I need some ragged Pennsylvania Provincials to man the fort.<br />

Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy.<br />

Fort Bedford Location lies East of Fort Necessity and Southeast of Fort Pitt. In the lower right of this map.<br />

After several failed attempts in the early 1750's, the British launched a major offensive against Fort Duquesne in 1758. Facing the formidable task of crossing the Allegheny Mountains and the threat of attack, numerous stockades were built along the trek west. Fort Bedford was constructed as a key fortification along the military path, Forbes Road, and served as the staging area for the successful campaign. After the war, Fort Bedford was used as a British outpost on the frontier as refuge from Indian attack as the exploration westward increased. The stockade stood strong until the 1770's.</span><span 12px="12px" 19.200000762939453px="19.200000762939453px" font-size:="font-size:" georgia="georgia" imes="imes" justify="justify" line-height:="line-height:" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" text-align:="text-align:"> </span></div>

There were two M&T games played at the Guns of August convention in Williamsburg Va this weekend. I missed both but got pictures of one of them.<br />
<br />
Game #1 Friday Night: Here are some pictures of the Friday night game. I missed it. Dang the DC traffic. Was American War for Independence and not FIW. The Colonials are in and around the tavern in the upper left The British Hessian unit is marching down the road. Believe the Colonial Objective was Protection with the civilians in the building.<br />

The British steadily advanced but failed to inflict any serious casualties on the Americans. The American Commander was killed but the civilians were saved. Victory to the Americans.<br />
